Description: This noncredit online asynchronous course is the first course of the “Sickle Cell Care Coordination for Achieving Patient Empowerment” project, hereafter referred to as SCCAPE. This course, developed by the Department of Internal Medicine’s Sickle Cell Disease Program team and supported by VCU Continuing and Professional Education & LEDstudio, is designed to introduce community healthcare workers, and others in the field, to Sickle Cell Disease and review the types of disease, the complications of the disease, the pain, treatments, and how patients move from pediatric to adult services. The first course, Introduction to Sickle Cell Disease, includes five (5) lessons:
- Overview of Sickle Cell Disease
- Acute and Chronic Complications of Sickle Cell Disease
- Pain in Sickle Cell Disease
- Current Treatment Options for Sickle Cell Disease
- Transition from Child to Adult Services in Sickle Cell Disease Care
This course should take participants approximately 3-5 hours to complete.

Any available coupon codes must be used/applied at the time of enrollment, cannot be combined with other discounts/coupons or waivers, and will not be retroactively applied.
Cancellation and Refund Policies: No refunds are available after registration.
In the unlikely event that this course is cancelled or postponed due to insufficient enrollments or unforeseen circumstances, the university will fully refund registration fees, but cannot be held responsible for any other expenses, including change or cancellation charges to include but not limited to airlines, hotels, travel agencies, or other organizations.
