Description: In this course the learner will be introduced to the behavioral health disorders seen commonly in Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) care. As well, the learner will be introduced to some of the common behavioral barriers and challenges facing almost all patients with SCD. Each of the common behavioral disorders seen in SCD will be described. How mental health specialists diagnose common behavioral health disorders associated with SCD will be described, including common screening tools. Treatment options for these behavioral disorders will be described. The central role of community health workers in helping teams to diagnose and manage these disorders will be highlighted. This course has four (4) lessons:
- Overview of mental health issues in patients with SCD
- Screening tools to assess mental health status
- Treatment for persons with mental health issues
- Pediatric and youth mental health concerns
This course should take participants approximately 3 hours to complete.
Course Outcomes
Describe the impact of the common mental health concerns of patients with SCD and various treatment strategies employed to assist them.
