Description: This course will describe the U.S. Health Care of which community health workers will be working. There are three (3) lessons:

  1. General structure of health care in the U.S. focusing on some of the organizations and government agencies that provide funding and oversight.
  2. How the U.S. healthcare system has approached sickle cell disease (SCD) care including some of the challenges and issues that are being faced by patients and providers.
  3. Recommendations to improve the care system with the goal to improve the patient experiences and outcomes.

This course should take participants approximately 3 hours to complete.

Course Outcomes

Define ways CHWs can assist the patient with a chronic disease such as SCD to manage their activities of daily living, live a healthy lifestyle and become more self-sufficient.
